On Wednesday 18th October, the University of Dundee will be holding a Girls’ Comics Symposium, with renowned guest academics, a creative workshop, roundtable and a launch party for a brand new Ink Pot anthology: Wilma!
TALKS AND WORKSHOP
TIME: 2 – 4PM
VENUE: DUNDEE COMICS CREATIVE SPACE (Vision Building, Perth Road)
This symposium celebrates female figures in British Comics, and kicks off with two guest speakers – Dr Julia Round (Principal Lecturer, Bournemouth University), and Dr Joan Ormrod (Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies, Manchester School of Art). Julia’s research interests are in gothic and comics, and children’s literature, while Joan focuses on women in comics and subcultural identities. Both are editors of peer-reviewed journals on comics. The event will be chaired by Olivia Hicks.
The second hour will be a workshop on girls comics with guest artists, where participants can design their own ‘girls comic’ – this promises be a lot of fun!
ROUNDTABLE
TIME: 5 – 7PM
VENUE: TOWER BUILDING
At 5pm there will be a reception at the Tower Building foyer, where the Girls in Print exhibition is being shown. At 5.30pm the roundtable on Women in Comics will begin in Baxter 1.36 (Tower Building). The event will feature former DC Thomson sub-editors Rhoda Miller and Rosemary Chivers, who will discuss their work on titles such as Mandy, Bunty, Diana and Spellbound, plus current comics artists Elina Bry of Scottish female comics collective Teen Girl Comic and Rebecca Horner, who recently graduated from the Masters course in Comics & Graphic Novels at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. They will be joined by comics experts Dr Joan Ormrod (Manchester School of Art) and Dr Julia Round (Bournemouth University). The roundtable will be chaired by Olivia Hicks.
